Originally there were 4 spinoff ideas which grew to 5. 1 is "on the shelf" and 1 is moving forward with a pilot ordered. the others aren't necessarily dead all together but HBO's preference is to do 1, not 2-4 at once. At least one of the options did not involve Westeros at all but not sure what the 4 options were and/or which of the 4 was selected. Here is the official description of the pilot...

"Taking place thousands of years before the events of Game of Thrones, the series chronicles the world's descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour. And only one thing is for sure: from the horrifying secrets of Westeros's history to the true origin of the White Walkers, the mysteries of the East, to the Starks of legend … it's not the story we think we know."

GRRM went on to suggest that Westeros in this story is in a very different place, pre-dating King's Landing or the Targaryens even - though he noted "Valyria has hardly begun to rise yet..."
